Making a rod basket
Basket making is an old Irish craft but, like many other Irish customs that craft is now nearly extinct. Very few of the present generation can make a basket but in this neighbourhood an occasional man still plies the trade, but not on a very extensive scale.
To make the basket properly, the hoop, ribs, and rods should be procured some time previously. The hoop is generally made from a suitable but of holly or strong briar, which is tied in position, and left to season.
