    He returned to Strokestown on that night quite safely except for the loss of his hat which he could never overtake on his return journey.
    There is a big hill of sand at Strandhill which was blown in that night and it remains there still.
    Almost fifty years ago an old woman named Bessie McGreevy lived in this district, she was born on the night of the big winds and the youngsters who happened to meet her on their way to school, used to blow their breath on their fingers. This act annoyed the poor creature very much and many a complaint was made by poor Bessie to the children's parents.
    My mother told me a strange thing about this storm was that the air was so calm that you could walk about with a lighted candle between the gusts.
