- Once upon a time a man wanted to have a log turned at the smith's forge so he started very early in the morning as he thought, for there were no clocks in Ireland then, but it was only midnight. He was walking along the road when he met a crowd of horsemen and after that came a coffin carried by a lot of men. He said, "I will go a bit and carry the coffin" as was the custom. He threw the log on the coffin and no sooner had he done so than all the men melted away and he was left on the road with the dead man.
