a fair in Sligo a distance of thirty miles and back again the same day. He was also known to walk from his own house to fairs over the West some thirty or forty miles distant. For several years he walked from his own house to Strokestown and did several districts the same day being Relieving Officer and back again home in the evenings. James Forde Lismacool Elphin, milked his cows in the morning, started for Cullenamore, thirty miles away with a kettle of butter to his wife who was at the sea and was back again to milk in the evenings. He never walked on a road only to cross one but kept to the fields all the time.
