- In ancient times a family named Mills lived there. One of the Mills was High Sheriff in the County of Roscommon. He caused a certain man (who was believed to be innocent of crime) to be hanged in Roscommon. When the man was taken down from the scaffold, he stirred. Mills took out his penknife and cut his throat, as he himself was in a hurry to attend a dinner to which he was invited in Kelly's of Cargins. On arriving at Kellys, the ladies refused to sit at the table with Mills as they had heard of his deed.
Mills died shortly afterwards and it is said that his ghost still appears in Cherryfield House.(continues on next page)
