“At first flax was sowed in ridges as corn was sowed long ago.”
At first flax was sowed in ridges as corn was sowed long ago. It flowered in the harvest and was then fit for reaping. It was then pulled and tied into bundles or sheaves. It was placed in a bog hole or a pond and covered with water for three weeks. It was taken out and the bundles were opened and left to dry. The smell from it at this time was unbearable. When it was dry it was pounded with a mallet or threshed with a flail to break the fibre. It must then be scutched on a stone.- Collector
