Mr. Thomas Breen's house was formerly occupied by a Protestant named Galloway. The road past the house was not built at the time, and it was intended that it should go in another direction. Galloway, however, was very influential, and he prevailed on the engineers to build it so that it would pass by his gate. That is why there are two right - angle turns on the road from Fleming's Cross to Breen's Cross.
After Galloway's death the house was owned by Joe Walsh, who was married to an aunt of Thomas Breen's. His father was known by the name of Medlar Walsh, and hailed from the Walsh Mountains. Joe Walsh was a noted Fenian, and his house was a rendez-vous for all the "boys". Wandesforde, the landlord, who knew of his association with the organisation, endeavoured unsuccessfully to evict him. Paul Kinsella's father was a member of the Fenians and used often go to Breen's. Mr. May who lived at May's Cross, was an ex-policeman, and knew all about the meetings.
