The name of the master was Mr Morrison.
In the winter they had to bring a turf each to warm themselves.
There was a very old hedge school at Clenagun, my grandfather used to go to it, he brought turf and potatoes every week.
The children in those days had no pencils, nor paper, and the teacher taught them their letters by covering the floor with dust, and then with their fingers they made the letters.
Each night the master lodged with the pupil's parents.
The boys worse petticoats, and went barefooted to school.
When the boys got out to play they beat each other with ragworths, and if the master went to stop them they would beat him too.
