One evening he went to Milltown Malbay to the priest's house to a dinner party. He went on horse back as both side-cars and traps were an unknown luxury then.
When the party was over he set out for home. He came by what is now called the "upper road" that is through Maurice's Mills, because the "new line" which forms the bus route between Ennis and Ennistymon had not been made then. [The "new line" is really seventy old yet it is still called the "new line"]
It was a lovely night and as Father Meade was not in a particular hurry he went along fairly slowly to save his horse. After he had gone four or five miles a bird flew across his path and it seemed to him that the bird when passing him out said "Dun deabhadh."
