  1. Hedge-schools
    There was a hedge-school in Reary, in a field which now belongs to Peter Redmond, and this field is called Pat's field, because the last teacher that taught in that hedge-school was Pat Malone.
    There was a hedge-school in Gurteen, and another in Scaroon, as these were very old, there is not much to be known about them.
    It was the rule in hedge-schools long ago, that if one of the pupils was considered capable of teaching, the old teacher would go to another school, and leave his best pupil to teach in his stead.
