    In 1800 an incident occurred, which aroused the interest of the people residing on or near the Slieve Bloom mountains, and it is the story arising from this incident I am about to relate.

    One November Eve a small farmer named Delaney went to pay his rent. The agent named Ealey accepted the rent and handed him a notice of eviction in return saying "Your son is poaching with his dog and gun and therefore you may go", naming the day.
    The poor man returned home and told the son the sad news, whereupon James (the son) set out with his gun and awaited the approach of the agent, as he passed on his usual walk to the Castle of Ballickmore, Where he lived.
