When the cows are brought in to be milked they are bailed up with a chain in a byre. When you are finished milking each cow it is an old custom to make the sign of the cross on the hip with the froth.
When a cow is cross its back legs are shanceled so that it will not kick. The people say that it is very lucky to have a goat or an ass with them. It is said that if a swallow builds its nest in a cow house you are supposed not to touch it and if you do the cow will milk blood.
