- Hedge schools were to be found in many districts in Ireland in olden times. These houses were built of sods of clay and roofed with timber and peat sods.
At Derryfore there was a "Hedge School" in the 18th century. The school master or mistress were paid by the children who took a few pence each. The teacher in this school was Miss Cuddy She taught reading spelling and writing. She taught in syllables such as. hu-man human.
