  1. In olden times thee were no National Schools. In each townsland there was a school called "A hedge school"
I will now write about the one in my townsland. In Cappanaclough about four miles from Abbeyleix there was a hedge school in the corner of Tynan's field It was a small house where the school was carried out. The ruins are still to be seen. The teacher's name was Patrick Flynn. Each pupil paid his teacher threepence per week. Where the teacher lodged I do not know perhaps he lodged in the house where he taught.
