    Almighty Spirit!...

    Almighty Spirit! Whilst with awe I gaze
    Upon thy wondrous works in those grand hours
    My mind to thy Eternal Throne I raise-
    I roam, in spirit, thro' those blessed bowers
    Where you for ever hold unbounded sway
    And pour the shades at night and blaze of day
    On these, our nether spheres - where you control
    And guide the costellations as they roll
    Oh brilliant orb! that since thy maker's will
    First formed thee out of nought, has shed thy light
    On Ocean, mountain, Valley, lake and hill,
    What veils thee now from curious mortal sight?
    Say is the fount exhausted whence you drew,
    The gold of even, the morning's purple hue -
    Those springs of life and light that warmed the earth
    Since the All-powerful Being gave it birth.
    Let sage philosophers say what they will,
    Let Coppernicus and Des Cartes rant
    Let fam'd Sir Isaac ponderous folios fill
    With his wild theories and learned cant
    Of planetary laws and revolutions
    Conjunctions, transits and vast convolutions
