  1. There are a few ruins in this district, one at Red Castle, another are Aughavoe.
At Red Castle a few miles from Mountrath there is the(r) ruins of a castle which was owned by the O'Moores. It was guarded by a dyke, which was the whole way around. It was built of red bricks & this is how it got its name. Also at Aughavoe. It was founded by St. Canice & was destroyed by the Danes. In Kenny's field on the Maryboro' Road there are the ruins of a roand tower. It is not known by whom it was built, nor there is no tradition as regarding(s) it.
