- The food in olden times was very poor. The people only got stirabout and milk. They got brown bread and wheatenmeal bread at times. The people very seldom ate meat and when they did it was a very small piece. When Lent would come and if any bit of meat remained the people would tie it up and place it in the ceiling of the house. They never tasted meat during Lent. There were no candles or oil - lamps in those times. When night came one of the family would get a rush and dip it in grease and light it.
