    of the above named places. The position of toll-levies goes by contract, preference being given to the lowest tender. Toll is levied at the rate of sixpence a cow and three pence a pig.
    Luck-money is always given by the seller of a best, and it may be recorded that a prolonged period of argument often ensues over the luck-money. It is commonly called in this district by the name "luck-penny," and rarely exceeds half a crown. There is no fixed basis in allowing the "luck-penny," it merely depends on the generosity of the seller. When making a bargain quite a number of men assemble in a group around the bargaining pair and each tries to bring the two concerned to an agreement. When an agreement has been made the buyer and seller clap hands. Then the buyer takes up a piece of mud and rubs it on the bad of the animal to show that an agreement has been made. Then the purchaser marks the animal by a scissors cut or a stroke of saddle.
