    haste he chanced to see the reflection of his countenance in a shop window and naturally he was puzzled by the black face. He stood for a moment to find an explanation. Suddenly a bright idea flashed across his mind. He gave a sigh of relief and turning again towards his lodging-house said "The Landlady called the wrong man."
    Having been laughed to scorn for his foolish prank Paddy felt disgusted and disappointed with himself, so he started out again for Ireland. He was ashamed to return to his old home so he managed to pick up a suitable job with an Irish farmer.
    He had soon been taken into his master's confidence and was succeeding admirably till one day he made an unpardonable blunder. His master came to him one morning with an important message which he was to deliver to a great friend of his. having given him the friends address he took him to a store from which he gave him a basket containing a live hare. Paddy started on his journey in great form, delighted with himself for the favour bestowed on him.
    As he was striding along the road the hare began to jump within the basket. This aroused the
