    The "Big Famine" which occurred during the years eighteen forty six and forty seven

    would give them the food.
    Once the parish priest held a meeting in Gurteen, which the Boyle people attended. The priest urged the people not to pay the rents to the landlords but to keep the money and buy food. This was decided on, but just then the police came along, seized the people and imprisoned them in wooden huts. They gave them a pound each to enable them to go to America. Then their lands were taken and given to some English settlers.
