- (continued from previous page)about four inches high they are moulded again. This work is called second moulding. When the end of June comes the stalks are sprayed to preserve them from the blight. Some farmers spray the potatoes three times.
The early potatoes are dug in July, but the main crop is not dug till the end of September or early October. It is the children that pick the potatoes after school hours. They are picked into buckets and carried to the pits in which they are stored for the winter. Each pit is about twelve yards long + three feet deep. A coat of clay is put over those.
My father set different kinds of potatoes, for example, the Irish Champion, the American Champion, the Epicure, the British Oruleen, and the Irish White. The epicure, the Irish Champion + the American Champion grow best in my district.- Collector
