  2. There was a barn where Pat McDermott (Michael) of Currasallagh lives now. An old teacher named Higgins came and taught three times a year. The children of the village who went there paid him a shilling each for the instructions he gave them.
    The subjects he taught them were English and Arithmetic. At this time there was no Irish spoken in this district. There were no seats in the school and all the classes had to remain standing. They had no pens or pencils but they wrote with slate and pencil.
