“No hedge schools existed in Derryhanee.”
No hedge schools existed in Derryhanee. There was an old thatched school there. Mr. McSwifans was the first teacher there. He was paid thirty pounds a year. He was succeeded by Mr Kelly and Miss Woods. The teachers lodged in farmers' houses. The chief subjects taught were Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Grammar and Spelling. Books were used. There were six seats in this school each big enough to accomodate seven or eight pupils(no title)
