- There are marriage customs in every country. Ireland as well as any other country in the world has its own marriage Customs.
The majority of marriages take place in the season of Shrove in this locality, which begins on the first Sunday after little Christmas day and it ends on Shrove Tuesday.
Every farmer's daughter has a "fortune." When she is of age to get married, the parents get someone to go to a man that they think would be suitable for their daughter. This person was called a "speaker."
The man and his parents then consider the affair and next they appoint a place where they will "make the match." This means that the girl and her parents, and the boy and his parents will come to some house and settle as to the sum of money the man is to get. But before giving the money they first go to see the man's farm.
