One night Tom Kelly the schoolmaster who used to teach in English's old barn was rambling in English's house. Mr English and he were sitting beside the fire and they both made up this rhyme between them.

The chimney separates the kitchen from the room.
It serves both night and day.
It helps to kindle up the fire and takes the smoke away.
