    Coominches" means green low-lying land divided into two parts by a narrow river. "Allihies" is so called from the high cliffs which range the sea-coast near that district. The word "Barness" or "Bearna" means a "Gap" because this district is situated near a class of gap or opening in a hill which separates Allihies from Cahermore. The word "Caherine" means "The Little City." This town-land is so called because it is the smallest in this district. The word "Fuher" is taken from "Foithin" which means shelter. This town-land is situated in a sheltery place.
