    On a fine November's day the lorries left Macroom.

    When we saw the black smoke rising high we knew our boys had won,
    The lorries they were set in fire, the Black and Tans were done.

    The people of the district ran in terror of their lives,
    And married men of sixty left their children and their wives;
    These men of course were innocent but still what could be done,
    They had to be protected from the bayonet and the gun.

    The soldiers of the castle did not search at all that night,
    The following day they found their dead it was an awful sight;
    They burned stacks of straw, ricks of turf, and sheds of hay,
