- Kilmichael the parish in which we live was the scene of a great ambush in the year 1920. At that time English military were scattered all over the country owning to the trouble which prevailed.
The Irish Republican Army had become very active and were trying by every means in their power to subdue English rule in the country. Ambushes became frequent and on the twenty eight of November, on a Sunday evening, the Kilmichael one took place.
Some of the British had taken up residence at Macroom Castle. They were known as the "Black and Tans." They went out on lorries that Sunday evening towards Shanacashel. The Republicans expected them and had waited for them. They had mines laid on the road which blew up the last lorry. The Republicans fired on the survivors and there was a counter-attack. The whole thing lasted only about a half an hour but the shots could be heard miles away. The English lost heavily losing all their men except one who was very seriously wounded and was unable to tell the tale.
