- (continued from previous page)the former name of the river was probably abandoned in favour of the old name Shournagh, to avoid confusion with another river of the same name in the county. The site of Crubeen Bridge marks one of the boundaries of the liberties of the city of Cork as early as 1462. Cork men for many generations have passed over this quaint old structure for recreation as rambles or sportsmen. And even to day a passer-by may see from its low parapet the flash of a Kingfisher under the willows on the river bank or watch the antics of the dipper, or water ausel as it bathes in the pool. Tranquil beauties of nature yet spared for our enjoyment.
