    The vicinity of Macroom of is a country celebrated for its Raths, Cromlechs, "Crooked Stone" for sacrificial purposes, and Ecclesiastical remains becoming wider and more imposing near Inchigeela where stands the Castle of Castle of Carrignacurra - "The Weir Rock", - said to have been built by the Mac Carthys, subsequently held by the O'Learys; but Dermot Óge O'Leary joined in the wars of Desmond and Tyrone, in 1588, was attained, and his estates forfeited. The Castle is now the property of the Payne family. In the landscape becomes wilder in character; the rocky hillsides are tinted with the purple of the heather and yellow of the furze, with here an there a patch in "verdure clad" which the industry of man has reclaimed from the surrounding barrenness.
