- (continued from previous page)his son in the middle of his statement. Finally he and four others were convicted and hanged for murder at Macroom. Their heads were set on spikes at the Bridewell and remained there for along time, grim memorials of a terrible crime and equally retribution.
The vengeance for the crime did not cease with these five executions. Further arrests were made subsequently, and after trial four others were convicted and hanged. These included a servant employed by Hutchinson, and two brothers, Charles and Owen McCarthy. Sixteen others for aiding and abetting in the murder and other outrages were sentenced to transportation for life. it was strongly held at the time that innocent of crime transported [sic].
