- (continued from previous page)inimical to Irish interests then Charles I and his advisers, the Supreme Council of the Irish Confederate Catholics, sitting at Kilkenny, felt seriously alarmed at the situation likely to confront them in the near future. They decided to send envoys to Spain and Rome to seek further assistance. The messenger to Rome was their secretary, Richard Bellings. He reached his destination about the end of February, 1645 and was presented to the new Pope, Innocent X, by Fr. Luke Wadding as the acredited envoy of the Confederate Catholics of Ireland. The envoy performed his mission so well that that His Holiness was deeply impressed with the struggle the Irish were making and resolved to send them greater aid than he had yet sent. He also decided to send to Ireland an ecclesiastic of high rank who could be relied upon to keep Rome faithfully informed of the real starts of affairs in that country.
