    secondly Helen, daughter and heiress of O'Leary of Millstreet. His eldest son by his first wife woo Denis McCarthy of Coom legane, who assumed the name of O'Leary, in accordance with the Will of his step-mother when he inherited her property. His son and heir was John McCarthy - O'Leary of Coomlegane, born in 1814 died in 1860, who was high Sheriff of Bo. Cork in 1854, and Deputy Lieutenant of that county. He married a daughter of John O'Connell, of Grenagh, The Liberator, and widow to O'Donoghue of the Glens. They had (amongst others) a son William, born in 1849, who was Lieutenant-Colonel in the 40th Regiment and was killed at Pieters Hill, South Africa, in 1900, leading his men into action. He was married to Marry Considine, of era, Co. Limerick, and their son, William, was killed in Flander, in 1916, aged twenty-two years.
