“The chief local "estate" was the Bantry Estate owned by Lord Bantry.”
The chief local estate was the Bantry Estate owned by Lord Bantry. This was the old McCarthy district.
An agent remembered as being a good man for giving decent leases etc, was Somers Payne.A "clearance" in a minor scale took place in Dromree and neighbouring townlands about 2 or 3 miles N.W. of town about [blank] years ago. By a turn of the wheel, the owners having recently died without issue, the land has just been subdivided by Land Commission and several of the descendants of those "cleared" are again firmly in possession of the old lands.
