Long ago the people made their own candles. This is the way they made them. The fat of cattle boiled thin, it is allowed to cool, and then it is rolled with a round bottle into a sheet. Rushes are rolled in it, and it is left for one night in a cold place. The candles were seldom used.

Long ago candles were made from tallow or lard. It used to be boiled in a pot, and while warm it used to be made into sheets, and rolled round rushes. Splinters of pine or oak were often used instead of rushes. This light was only used on certain occasions.
