- During the penal days if priests were caught they usually put to death. In those days mass was said secretly. Some of those mass-rocks are still to be seen. The nearest one to my house is at a place called Clonburn in the County Roscommon. It is about six miles from Ballinasloe. The rock is still to be seen with two steps beside it. There was a hole in the rock beside it and in it the holy water was kept.
It is said that there is a cure in the water that is in the hole of the rock. There is a graveyard about two? yards from it.- Collector
