    day it was used as a press. The name they had on this was a settle-bed.
    In olden times the people used splinters as the means of obtaining light. They stuck these in the wall while the children were learning their lessons and it was these that gave them light.
    People often went out by night hunting and it is said that they used bunches of splinters. Later people made candles of melted tallow and fat.
