The hurley ball they used long ago was made around a piece of whale-bone, which they coiled into a round hollow shape. They wound flax thread around this. They use to "trighel" it - winding the thread regularly to form a regular ball, and in such a way that it wouldn't unravel. When it was big enough they covered it with leather.
