    Lent or Advent, May or August. The idea about May and August is that both months are dedicated to Our Lady. In this locality nobody gets married on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
    Up to thirty years ago there were "MATCHMAKERS" travelling round the country. These men were really a kind of "tramp" who knew each home intimately and how the owner was "circumstanced." He travelled a certain district all the year round and in his own mind marked out those eligible for marriage. Immediately Xmas was over he was on his travels "introducing" matches - letting one farmer know where another who had a suitable daughter for the farmer's son lived. If this man was willing to "settle his son down" the match-maker "took the news" to the girl's people and arranged for both parties to meet at some public house either in a village or town.
