  2. In olden times faction fights were a common sight. At Coachford some seventy years ago faction fights between the rival families of the Healys and the Murphys were frequent. Usually these fights took place on Sunday immediately after 12 oclock Mass. Friends as well as relatives of these two families participated in the fight. The only weapons used were bottles and ash plants. One of these fights was in progress on a particular occasion when a well-known gentleman resident of the district who was watching it from a safe distance decided to stop it. Mr Hayes, the gentleman, mounted a big black horse and with a tarred cabbage stump in his hand rode through the ranks of both duellists pointing the
