- The forts were built long ago by the Danes as a protection against enemies. Three forts are always within sight of each other, so that the people who lived in them could signal to other in case of being attacked.
Forts are also called "raths or lios." It is not right to interfere with the forts, as fairies are supposed to live in them.
There was a fort near Bantry, in the townland of Ardra. Every day at noon a small man wearing a peaked hat used call to a farmer's house nearby, and he wouldn't speak to anyone only to the farmer's eldest daughter. One day while he was inside he said something, and the farmer's wife commenced to laugh, and she couldn't stop, with the result that she died laughing, and the little man was never seen after.
That woman was Mrs O' Shea's mother in Clonakilty.
There was another fort near Bantry in the townland of Colmane. One night a man from the same townland was passing the fort, he heard all the music, and he stopped to listen to it. After(continues on next page)- Collector
