Kilgobbin castle is situated near Inishannon...

Kilgobbin castle is situated near Inishannon and was built by the Gobán Saor in the dawn of the twelfth century. The Gobán Saor is descended from the Mac Carthys. This castle was built on the bank of the Bandon river and from its summit can be had a splendid view of the surrounding district. It was about one hundred feet in height but one day when the English soldiers were going up to Shippool Castle near Inishannon they fired a volley at it and blew thirty feet off it.
