- In the neighbourhood of Ballincourreening, hidden deep in fern and gorse lies a Mass Rock. Here in Penal days when priests were hunted and hounded down like beasts, this rough stone served as an altar to offer the Divine Sacrifice. Engraved on this rock is an image of a holy water font, while beside it runs crystal bright a lovely spring. Local legend has it that this water was used when offering the Mass in those sad days.
It is also on record that a mass rock lies in the glens of Clashanaifrinn, though the local folk cannot now point it out. The name of the locality however indicates that it must have some connection with the mass.- Collector
