    called the Owenanaar. It got its name from a great battle that was fought there about the year 1510. The Mac Auliffe clan, who lived in my district travelled to Newcastle West in Co Limerick, and defeated an English army there. The MacAuliffes were attacked in a few days after their retain home - by a stronger English army who were victorious. So many were killed that the river ran red with blood, and hence the name Owenanaar
