- Shrove is usually the period of the year for marriages. August and May are known as the unlucky months for the marriages Monday, Wednesday and Friday are the unlucky days. It is very unlucky to wear green on a marriage day or to meet a funeral on the way to the church. The farmers in this district usually make matches for their sons and daughters. The matchmaker is usually called "the Gander."The Bridegroom goes to the Church first on the wedding- day, and waits for the bride.
