  1. The Landlord of Kanturk town and a good port of the district was the Earl of Egmont. He never lived in the district. Whenever he came he stayed at the local Hotel known as the "Egmont arms Hotel." He sometimes entertained his friends in a Ballroom attached to the Hotel. He was looked whom as a good Landlord and during his lifetime he gave a good deal of employment to local trades men and labourers. After the death of the Earl the estate was sold out to the people and all his former tenants became the owner of their own houses and lands.
