    In former days people depended almost entirely on home remedies for every ailment. To cure a pain in the ear they used a piece of bacon placed up against the ear.
    For whooping cough they looked out for a man driving a white horse and they believed he could give a cure by just asking him what he recommended. If he said take a drink of water it was considered a remedy.
