    hurt him when they were being driven. In many houses there grows a house leek on the thatch this leek saves the house from being burnt.Outhouses are thatched by the handyman in a different way to the dwelling house.Those houses were thatched with heath or rushes and was called thatching with runners. Rows of twigs were placed across the house and spars were driven through these to hold the thatch. Each bay is begun at bottom of the roof. Some old thatchers turned the heads of the reed down and it was those parts were pared by the knife, and the lower part of the reed and the stubble ends was preserved. All thatchers now do the work the opposite way and the heads are covered in the thatch and the stubble ends are pared away. This looks to be nicer work. Back baskets were made locally, and in every haggard sally twigs were grown.Those baskets were used for drawing in turf to the kitchen fire, for removing potatoes in the digging season and when the bog was so soft that a donkey could not stand in it those
