    and wax candles used at mass were made by some housekeepers who gave them to the priests "Snuffers" were used in some houses to cut away the burnt wicks which were not pleated Rush-lights were also used and in later times what we call "tinkers lamps" were used. Those lamps had wicks; petroleum was used but the lamps had no chimneys, and filled the rooms with smoke. There are a few houses which still use those lamps.
