    1882 the rent of that same holding was £14.
    That was due to the reclaimed land being valued and extra rent put on from year to year. The farms were not sub-divided among members of families on marriage. The landlord exercised special powers over the tenants and they were punished for trivial acts.
    As the tenants had no lease of their holdings they were what is called yearly tenants and they dare not offend the land-lord or his agent, because their holding would then be given the following year to any other person who would agree to pay the rent, or, indeed without
